Tangerine Dream Were early exponents of the use of electronics and multiple tracking. Tracks are often of "Symphonic" length. |
Date back to the 1970s. The original vinyl albums have just been reissued on heavy grade vinyl (May 2000) and apparently show up the dreaded MP3 format! Recent teletext comment suggests that they are important to the current dance (trance?) scene. This is probably the case, but are the most recent bands really as good? |

Connection to Radiohead. They were signed to Virgin, but are now back on Shifty Disco which released a track "Building" on the Singles Club back in 1997.The new album "Sorry ThankYou" is likely to be the biggest Shifty seller so far. Just played it through and the reaction is play it again! Let it Flow track 13 is great, as is Landslide the single. |

grrr! |
|
They are compared with Radiohead, but are also able to rock! Singles were limited editions, but can be accessed on the group website as streaming audio files. There is also at least one bootleg! The site is in rebuild, but I do not propose to set up a page. Give them a visit! There is a CD of rarities. Very interesting, but it is a bootleg with no sleeve notes! |

Stone Roses also The Seahorses and Ian Brown solo.

Second single illustrated here. This is one of the few where John Squire was not the main artist. They led the revival on the UK music scene, notably the "Rave" and "Madchester" scenes. The first album was a groundbreaker and influenced many other bands. The follow up was a problem! It has been argued that "E" was one of the reasons for stifling creativity. Newsgroup. |

Australia |
Are an Australian band with a 20 year history. The site listed is really excellent and has audio and video samples on line. |
|
Australian, dating from before INXS. The album "The Blurred Crusade" dates from 1982. Steve Kilbey has a dark, distinctive vocal style and, like Mark Burgess is the bassist in the band. They are still recording, with a very distinctive approach! Each member contributes more than one instrument.1998 saw the release of "Hologram of Baal" which had a limited edition second CD. See webpages. |

Canada |
Have a very distinctive vocalist. Sample "Thief" as a first track. You may well want to hear more. |
|
Canadian band. Discovered on Napster site thanks to a comment from a guy on mIRC. "Thief" is well worth a download. Group signed to Sony. The band have a website. Album is HAPPINESS... IS NOT A FISH THAT YOU CAN CATCH. Thief is track 7. Deleted Early tracks Naveed, Superman's Dead and Clumsy are worth downloading. New album out now. |

The first album was well received, but they have been less fortunate since. It seems that experimenting is unwise? "Six" is a very underrated album. |
|
Underrated band, with a wide range of output, even sampling "classical" material. They have had some very odd song titles, notably "Stripper Vicar". The sleeve is the FIRST Mansun single by the way. There are only 1000 of them and the Record Collector guide suggests they are worth £25.00. The new album Little Kix has been panned by the critics. Seems if you change or stay the same you get panned! |

Ride |
|
One of the "Shoegazing" bands? There was stress between Mark and Andy which eventually led to breakup. Mark is now in "The Animal House" and Andy in Oasis, playing Bass, not lead! See group page for more. Er I did get round to writing it! I show the US sleeve of "Going Blank Again" from 1992. Later albums have been reissued. A new US band, Ultra Grey quote Ride as an influence. |

The Smiths and of course, Morrisey. A new band, JJ72 are apparently very strongly influenced by The Smiths. |
|
A band with cult status. The single sleeves did not feature the band, but some other artist. The sleeve illustrated is Shakespeare's Sister 1985. The B side is "What She Said" and the vinyl has the comment " Home is Where the Art is". There have been numerous other collaborations, notably by Johnny Marr, at least one of which mysteriously vanished. (With Ian McCulloch) |

Nick Drake |
|
Sadly was not recognised by too many when he signed for Island records in the very early years of that label. He showed an IMMENSE talent which is very influential today in 1999/2000. It clearly is "Bryter Later". Sadly Nick is dead, but his music lives on. The site link is highly recommended, with lyrics etc. on line. JJ72's "Black Eyed Dog" is good. |

Do you know what Echo was? The sleeve is for "Killing Moon", one of their best tracks. Ian McCulloch has also produced some solo albums and formed Electrafixion as a second band. There are also, I understand sessions with Johnny Marr which have vanished somewhere. Echo and The Bunnymen reformed, but are currently without a label. They have released a new EP. if you can get the site to accept your order! |

Senseless Things |
|
Short lived, with a very distinctive sleeve art style and sound too. Link to Heavy Stereo on Creation. The CD is "Got it at The Delmar" of 1991, and the design is by Jamie Hewlett. Oh yes, in those days you got 4 tracks, and something on both sides of the inlay card! |
||
Jamie has now become involved with Gorillaz. His style has the same impact today, as has his character "Tank Girl". |

Welsh |
Super Furry Animals |
Rebellious Welsh band. Early limited releases ARE in Welsh too! What did they do with that tank? |
|||
Yery distinctive sleeve art here too, but scarcely any band pics on any of them! Odd choice of name too! |

Manic Street Preachers |
If You tolerate this. or whatever? |
This band goes back a long way. They lost a member, Ritchie Edwards in mysterious circumstances. There is a lot of argument over the "change" in style, but all the back catalogue is worth buying and is clearly the same band. |

2001 |
New Album has stirred up a lot of comment yet again. Since I don't have it I'm unsure why! |

Album review page. Thanks to Nick for the loan of the CD. (Most likely going to buy it!) |
|
They have a well set out website with downloads on line. Just got
hold of the single "Minority". A really well made
track, with good lyrics, but beware! The acoustic bit is quiet, then
WOW! a really solid sound! Insomniac is an earlier album from 1994/5. |
