There are some bands in this "scene" elsewhere on the site.

The "Madchester" era was very significant in the 80s. Second page here.

Most of the bands have vanished, but the occasional member has popped up again recently, often with different and interesting results. The feature of the "Madchester" period was the illegal warehouse "rave" party which would usually be a one off affair. The "E" pill was just becoming a regular feature at the time and some commentators say it was a factor in stifling creativity to some extent. The city still has a presence on the music scene, despite the loss of the Hacienda venue. "Band on The Wall" is one of the better known small venues, as is the "Witchwood" .

Some Manchester area bands are listed elsewhere, since this section is, as you may have guessed an afterthought.

Yes there IS a site devoted to this era in British popular music. I guess there are more too, should you do a search! Guess I should include a net search box on here!

There are a whole series of long departed bands out there. I guess there are compilations and that sort of thing too. Pay them a visit!

For news re the band working together again!

Inspiral Carpets. (1987?-1989) Members Clint Boon and Tom Hingley are both back! Tom has released a solo CD.

One of the few "Madchester" bands to feature a keyboard. The Charlatans, based South of the city also did, the late Rob Collins who died tragically. Clint Boon's sound was one of the major Inspiral sound features. Scroll down for Clints' new band! As to whether there will be more from the band, Not sure, they didn't really break up in a blaze of acrimony, so I guess it is just possible. Regarding Tom Hingley's new CD I'm sure he won't mind, but I got the feel of Tim Buckley in some of the tracks. Look that CD up folks! It's really good!

Joy Division (1978-1981)

This band lost a charismatic frontman in Ian Curtis. They resumed as New Order

The Smiths (1983-1988)

See listing entry on another page.

Doom and despondency?

James

"Sit Down" sang Tim Booth and they did! A teletext post reminded me that I had not entered the band. Alas Tim has quit.

The High

Box Set Go was one of the singles from the album " Somewhere Soon" of 1990. John Matthews is the vocalist. Andy was the fifth Stone Rose.

A connection here with the Stone Roses. The guitarist was a fifth member of that band, and can be seen on a grainy early video. A new album was about to be released, but was withdrawn. Reports at the time suggest a lot went into it too. The single "Sweet Liberty" (1992) is possibly from the album sessions, but I failed to find a track listing. The band pic on the sleeve clearly indicates a changed style, with very strong guitar playing if you can trace a copy. (LONCD 333)

The Mock Turtles (1987-1991)

Still rated highly on the collector circuit, with perhaps a chance of more to come. Will the Coogan comeback appear? There have been rumours for a while.

Moose

Yes, there is a band by this name. In fact there's one over the pond too I think! The website is very well done! More details to follow. There is an extensive back catalogue. Hutcd3 "Jack" etc (1991) reminds me vocally of the Aussie band The Church.

New Fast Automatic Daffodils (1990-?)

Long since disbanded? The band seemed to vanish around 1994 but I'm none too sure about that.

The Clint Boon Experience

Artful records.

Formed Late 1999 I think. Clint is still very interested in music and is assisting other bands too. See the band website or link to the label and order the new album today! This band is quite an experience! You can buy now as you browse! As you might expect, the album has a lot of keyboard effects and extensive use of opera style voice, both with lyrics and as a purely instrumental line. There are some surprises too, and yes, the copy I have does have Clint's autograph! The pic? Max, Clint's son aged five!

Badly Drawn Boy

Damon McGough has a cult status with a series of limited edition style issues. All the ones I have come across show an impressive range.

Doves

Four Miles Out

So far unsigned I think, but they have a website already, with music samples. As you see this is a big band! They are about to release a double CD album on Honest Records in November. Details can be found on the band website. Incidentally, it is one of the first I have seen to offer a WAP phone option. I don't have one so have not tried it!

Lamb

Manchester duo, but by no means constrained! Two albums. One is the eponymous "Lamb" the other "Fear of Fours."

Fear of Fours is an excellent and varied CD. The Fours, by the way are beats to the bar! Hear the one about the MUSE fan who booked for Lamb instead! OOPS! Well there were two websites. An official one with music online and an unofficial one, with a lot of content, but did it really date from 1997? The guestbook has current (praising) entries, so I guess its worth a stop over too. As to are they like MUSE? Not so musically, but they are creatively.
