Radiohead's Kid A is like Blur's 13 in terms of new ideas. Time to look at it again surely?

A mixture here again, from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Amon Duul and Amon Duul II

Legendary German Progressive band. They have had many lineups and spinoffs.Another band at that time was Can. Yet another related band is Kraftwerke. There have been some recent reissues in compilation form. Not easy when tracks are long in the first place! See March 2001 Record Collector.

UK

Yes

This band was eventually to become criticised for becoming too, well, not quite sure really, since I'm into longer works I accepted "Tales from Topographic Oceans". The style did evolve over time and the tracks did get longer and quasi symphonic at times. Jon Andersen also has produced solo work as have other members, notably Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman.

Geneva

A very distinctive band indeed, mainly as a result of the lead vocalist. The singles all have limited edition versions and the tracks are all worth hearing. The illustration (left) is the 7" vinyl version.

Have shown a wide range of style. Those familiar only with "The Man Who" will hardly recognise them on the first album "Good Feeling". The illustration is the five track promo CD released to promote " Good Feeling" the first album. Fran Healey does own up to some Oasis connections, but what's wrong with that? They do it too! Travis have had a lot of flak from the teletext audience, but it is unjustified.

New album soon. See the Travis page for links to e.cards re the album. PC and Mac links

Norway

a-ha

Norwegian trio with a very strong lead singer Morten Harket who also is a pin-up. They had a string of hits worldwide and have recently begun recording again. BBC radio 1 seems to have ignored them! East of the Sun West of the Moon is the album illustrated. A recent cover version was sanctioned by the band, but the original is still the version for me!

Blur

Arguably the instigators of Britpop. They date from 1990 with the singles "Shes so High" and "Bang!" Seen as rivals of Oasis, but very different musically. They also pre date Oasis by several years. They are accused of using other bands style, but a Blur album is of various styles, unlike some! Early Tracks are deleted and have risen in value. There is a singles box set, in a special case. Price?High! The album 13 is very underrated. Got Kid A? Try 13 too.

Comment

Just been playing the new CD. The tracks are out of strict chronological order. This shows just how wide the variety of styles the band have dabbled with (if that's the right term). A very interesting experience (unless you REALLY hate Damon's vocals!) CD2 in the "Special Edition" is live, rather like the Oasis album, except that here the musicians ARE the same ones! Damon seems to be going off on the African trail and has also got a hand in a cartoon style "band". "Music is My Radar" is perhaps a foretaste?

UK but from US

Walker Brothers and Scott Walker

Date back to the 1960s. Scott Walker was at the helm of the MELTDOWN Festival at the Royal Festival Hall on July 1st. 2000.This was a sold out success! Scotts 4 Philips CDs have just been remastered at Mid Price! The GTO albums are also available. The Sleeve is of the album "Images"

UK

Puressence

The band has produced a really fine set of singles, of which "Fire" is illustrated here. All seems to have gone quiet, which is a pity, since James has a very impressive voice. This band really deserve a listen. There has been some teletext mention, but rather quiet of late.

UK

Porcupine Tree

Cult band, but well worth a listen. Latest album "Lightbulb Sun" is excellent. Back catalogue worth seeking out too, but many were limited editions. The new website (see link) is excellent in layout and detail, with a comprehensive discography. The only snag is, it'll make you envious of those lucky or perceptive enough to get the earlier releases. Ah well, try Record Collector if you are determined! Imminent reissues could be worth seeking out.

Welsh

Stereophonics

Individual style and some very strange lyrics! Kelly sounds rather like Rod Stewart. They seem to be very patriotic, like Super Furry Animals. Songs have social and environmental shades at times. Local Boy, Traffic and 1000 Trees for instance.

New Album

Just Enough Education to Perform or JEEP as intended, has been slated by some critics. It hit No:- 1 here though. It's not in my collection as yet. Possible review candidate?
