Looking into my vinyl collection and playing some of it I'm aware that CD has been losing out musically in some cases. The November 2002 Record Collector mag underlines this in observations by and on the new Rolling Stones releases. A few quotes appear below.

Note the date this page was created.

Muse Hullabaloo. (SACD)

The live concert was "taped" both for DVD and SACD release as well as CD.

The Halle Planets. (SACD Hybrid)

Both the original version and that with "Pluto" by Colin Matthews appear on this SACD, as well as the original CD release (with Pluto) and an extra track "Lyric Movement" for viola and small orchestra.

The situation is complicated by the parallel development of DVD Audio as well.

CD

SACD

DVD A

First digital audio format. limited to about 80 mins playing time. Many early digital realisations were badly done technically, as shown by current remasterings from the same source material, which sound noticeably better than earlier releases.

Offers a frequency response wider than CD, replacing some transients lost by the CD "sampling" process. It has a 5 way "surround" potential, but is also two channel on a standard CD deck. The "hybrid" format allows for separate CD and SACD recordings on the same disc!

Also offers an enhanced frequency response, using DVD technology, but without the video element in some, but not all cases. The multi channel facility is available too, but these discs are not currently compatible with CD. I am unsure whether it offers the same wide range as SACD. There is also a "flipper" idea, with DVD on one side,CD on the other. The only problem is THICKNESS!

Enhanced CD

DVD

Universal Players.

Here the "multisession" facility of the CD is used, the music readable by the standard CD player, the video or other data by a computer CD drive. In a few cases an entire album has been added to a CD single in another format.

Originally developed as an alternative to the laser disc. As well as video, it also includes 5 channel surround audio. This is not however on all movies!

This is a trend just started, attempting to cope with all or most formats. In the case of SACD, this is a Sony and Phillips collaboration and tends not to be included.

After buying The Beatles Anthology on DVD, I'm astounded at how much better the songs sound compared with their albums on CD. It's not just audible, it's emphatic. Why? I don't have 5.1 surround sound. Have they remixed the sound again, or is DVD sound simply better than CD? It's annoying my CDs don't sound this good when the technology is there.
