First A truly Classic Single (Shine On)

Originally released on CREATION records CRE 043T 12". A 5 piece band initially, with a female member, Andrea Heukamp, soon reducing to four, partly as a result of pressure of touring. Tracks on 12" Shine On, Love and Flow. The title "Love" was to reappear again as further versions, not "remixes" as such.

This was actually the REISSUED 7" version on Fontana, who tended to issue special limited editions. The lead singer, Guy Chadwick is in the foreground.

This is taken from the first section of the Biography on Dag Nyholm and Dave Roberts' Webpage

Guy had a band prior to HOL, "The Kingdoms", but they had folded after one single on RCA. Guy placed an advert in Melody Maker and recruited Terry Bickers (guitar), New Zealander Chris Groothuizen (bass) and Andrea Heukamp (guitar and vocal) alongside old friend Pete Evans (drums). The pic is the band in 1987 as a 5 piece. Andrea Heukamp is centre back. Early releases were on Creation as Guy had pestered Alan McGee, or rather Alan's wife had by playing "Shine On" insistently! Released May 1987.

The band set out to tour with Felt and Zodiac Mindwarp and came close to being beaten up in London. "Real Animal" was recorded mid 1987, but was not as successful. They played at The Town and Country Club in London and were described as "devastating". As a result Alan McGee asked them to record an album. This they did in a mere 8 days (with rather a lot of chemical assistance apparently). The studio owner, Pat Collier had to complete the final mix since the vocals had got rather subdued apparently!

For the rest of the band history see Dag and Dave on their site. Also thank Chris Hanks for the discography.

Presumably the Creation reissue CD will include much, if not all of this material. I have yet to buy it though. A whole batch of compilations or box sets has appeared! Er NOT all HOL!

Monkey 7

A The Snowy Peaks / B It all comes back on you

7" single with Sam Smith and Nik Webb. Sam wrote the words and designed the sleeve. on Anvil Records I have to admit to being a bit out of date here, since the band site mentions 1999 as a start time. The single is, how shall I put it, rather different. No HOL sound connection at all!
