The Paradise Garage

84, King Street New York 1976 to 1987

The club was a DISCO, with DJs such as Larry Levan. Thanks to Sean of Brighton (UK) who prompted this little bit of research into the origin of the term "Garage" in the musical sense. The two site links contain a lot of info about both the club and genre, with a stack of clips and even large example sessions on the Disco-Disco.com link.

I hate the way a juvenile, transitory type of music has misappropriated the term "Garage".The expression came from a legendary New York nightclub, The Paradise Garage, where the music style was wildly eclectic.

So Garage music came to represent an open attitude to soulful, carefully crafted music.

It is annoying that it has had its image tarnished by teenage boy racers.

Artists you might look up mentioned on the two linked sites include:-Aretha Franklin, Art of Noise, The B-52's, Barry White, Billy Ocean, Booker T, Brass Construction, Candi Staton, Chaka Khan, Depeche Mode, Diana Ross, The Fatback Band, Five Star, Grace Jones, Kraftwerke to name but a few. Take a look for yourselves! Does UK "Garage" match up?

DJ OJI on speed garage

[...] Perhaps now I will step on some toes. I will apologize in advance. Why is it that the industry in England feels that is necessary to re-classify or categorize House music ? Every six months there is some sort of new twist on an old sound and it is born a new name. They come and they go. That sound is then changed and exploited by UK industry strong-arms, labels and producers and the creator never gets credit for his/her originality.

Now where have I read comments like this before?

Quote from "Speed Garage" on one of the links via the two I have posted. Very good coverage, browse for yourselves. Not sure who the quote is from.
