Genesis / Peter Gabriel

From Genesis to Revelation was the initial Decca album, with a Jonathan King as producer I think. It STILL sounds good over 30 years on! The band moved to Charisma in 1970, and the first two singles (The Knife and Happy the Man) are rated at a mere £300.00 in picture sleeves!

Genesis initially produced tracks of a similar dimension to fellow bands, but soon wrote longer ones so that 3 to an LP side became more likely. This culminated in the epic so called "concept album" "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" which is virtually a rock opera or suite. lyrics such as "hovering like a fly, waiting for the windshield on the freeway", or the "Carpet Crawlers" are typical. Out of the ordinary indeed!

Germany

Clear Vinyl album "Faust"

Faust

They are currently touring the UK,

The band date from the 1970s as experimentalists, breaking up in '74 but reunited in the late 80's. Oddly they sold better here than in Germany, on Polydor and Virgin. Polydor backed them with both a contract and studio equipment, without even hearing a note! Eventually though the deal failed and Virgin stepped in, with an almost free album, "The Faust Tapes" at 48p! All 100,000 copies sold out! For more, see Record Collector Nov.2000 page 54. www.recordcollectormag.com

Ireland

U2

Long established band, with a string of hits. They have begun 2000 with yet another strong album success.

Comeback

UK

Van Der Graaf Generator / Peter Hamill.

Like Genesis they were on the Charisma label and were a "progressive" band. "The Least We Can Do" includes single "Refugees" the really angry track "Killer" which still impresses is on H to He. They had a wider instrumental makeup than usual at the time, including Saxophones and flute.

Just Dug out "H to He Who Am The Only One". "Killer" still excels. This is 30, yes Thirty years on too. All done on an 8 track as well. Well worth looking it up!

UK

Suntreader a very interesting album. Details to follow.

Recorded at Marquee Studios, London, February 1973.

Zin Zin

A budget release on Island records. Not sure if they did any others. Morris Pert percussion, Peter Robinson Piano and Alyn Ross Bass.

Track 2 side 2

"From The Region Of Capricorn". Now available here as a 320kbs MP3.
*'...there is a strong source of radio signals in the region of the constellation Capricorn which have a wholly unexplainable regularity in their pulse and pattern. No visible object coincides with their source-point.` 'Sky Probe` Report. Aug.'72. This is the starting point for one of the tracks.

Back Where I Used To Be

From Greenock, originally on the Silvertone label and tipped as the "Next Big Thing" some time ago. So far they have not been! The album illustrated is on the YOYO label YOLP 01 based in Greenock. I suspect it is an own label effort, as goes for the recent singles.

Scottish band with a punk related style - at least they were originally.

Idlewild

Roddy Woomble is a great character and a good writer too. The band are rather underrated in my opinion. They could give Green Day a good run! Sleeves "Troubled Teens" and "Chandelier."

In a recent interview for Planet Sound (UK Channel 4 Teletext) Roddy states he is a huge Patti Smith fan and that her guitarist Lennie Kay, who he respects very highly is producing the new album, alongside Stephen Street. Seems the band were influenced by Lennie, so much so that they restarted the album in the Highlands at Ichnadamph Lodge! Dave Eringa was the producer, as for 100 Broken Windows. (interview text available by e. mail). Also now at Yahoo!

New Album Out Now!

The Remote Part is now out. I met the band today at a "signing" in Manchester. Most impressed! Played the album. Varied styles hang together very well. There does not seem to be a single weak track.

Roddy has also had a hand in the artwork, and there is common ground artistically with the band site, the album and the first two singles. Incidentally, "American English" has very strong new B sides. None of that "remix" crap here to pander to the "dance" crowd! I'm adding comments on all of these on the new page here on the album itself.

UK

Five Thirty

Very vigorous onstage.I have a compilation video somewhere.

UK

Airhead (Jefferson Airhead)

They had to drop "Jefferson" as a result of the US band Jefferson Airplane.

UK

Bridewell Taxis

Included Brass in the lineup. The music was released on a minor label in Indie style.

UK

Cast (LA's)

Recently absent for some reason, but have a number of good singles and albums. "There She Goes",a track by the LA's was recently covered by a "girl band"

UK?

Ben Folds Five

There has been a lot of comment on Teletext etc. since the split. So far I have not heard them. An omission I intend to amend. One point. If theres three of 'em, why Five in the name?

Germany?

German Collective? Not sure who this band are!
